Aisha (R) narrated that sometimes, the Prophet would not taste meat for six weeks. When she narrated this to Urwa, 40 years later, he asked, how did you live then? She said,
by eating two dark things.
By two dark things, she meant dates and dirty water. She called the water dark because back then, they did not have this clean filtered water.
Many years after the death of the Prophet , Abd-ar-Rahamn ibn Auf was brought a dish of meat with bread. To this day meat and bread is a prestigious dish. As soon as he saw this platter, he began crying. When asked why are you crying, he said,
the Prophet till the day that he died, he never ate wheat bread to his fill.
Forget with the meat, he never ate wheat bread to his fill even for one day.
As for Aisha (R), it is narrated many times that when good food was given to her later on, she would start crying. She would say the same thing, that the Prophet never ate rusty bread or hard bread to his fill even one day of his life.
